A Data Center Infrastructure BOM: What Should You Plan Before Procurement?

A BOM Should Represent a System, Not a Shopping List

Data-center projects often involve hundreds or thousands of individual components.

Creating a bill of material without understanding how those components interact can result in missing accessories, incompatible products or last-minute procurement.

A better approach is to build the BOM around infrastructure systems.

Structured Cabling

Start with the connectivity architecture.

Determine copper and fiber requirements, cable lengths, patching architecture, termination methods and expected future network speeds.

Brands such as Panduit and R&M offer infrastructure ecosystems supporting modern enterprise and data-center connectivity.

Fiber Pathways

Do not calculate only fiber cables.

Calculate where they will run.

Include pathway channels, bends, transitions, drops, mounting hardware and future pathway capacity.

Structured cable-routing platforms such as Panduit FiberRunner can help create defined routing architecture.

Racks and Cabinets

Plan rack height, depth, loading, airflow, cable management, PDUs and accessories.

Solutions from brands such as Netrack and Valrack can address different rack and enclosure requirements.

Power Protection

Identify the critical equipment load and determine how the environment will respond to a power interruption.

UPS capacity, redundancy and battery runtime should therefore be incorporated early.

Numeric solutions can form part of enterprise and critical-power infrastructure planning.

Copper LAN Infrastructure

Enterprise facilities may also require horizontal structured cabling for users, wireless access points, IP cameras and other systems.

Legrand CAT6 and related connectivity solutions can support enterprise LAN requirements depending on the project design.

Labeling and Documentation

A project is not complete because the cables are connected.

The final infrastructure should also be understandable.

Include labeling materials and documentation requirements in the project specification.

Expansion Capacity

One of the most useful questions during BOM preparation is:

What will we wish we had included two years from now?

Additional pathway capacity, spare rack space or scalable connectivity can cost relatively little during initial construction compared with retrofitting later.

One Distribution Partner Across Multiple Infrastructure Layers

Siddharsh’s authorized distribution relationships across network connectivity, racks, power and related infrastructure allow system integrators and enterprise customers to coordinate multiple project requirements through a single distribution relationship.

That can simplify:

technical coordination

BOM consolidation

product availability

order management

logistics

project execution
